Gastric Bypass Q & A

Do I need weight loss surgery?

If you’re carrying too much weight, your overall health may be in jeopardy. Obesity is closely linked to serious health problems, such as:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Sleep apnea

Transform Weight Loss offers weight loss surgery to help you achieve long-term weight loss, minimize your risk for grave medical conditions, improve your quality of life, and improve your overall well-being.

What is gastric bypass?

A gastric bypass is a surgical procedure that Dr. Billing performs to help you drop excess weight quickly. It’s one of the most common weight loss procedures and helps patients lose an average of 60 - 80% of their extra weight.

A gastric bypass is performed in two steps:

Create a small stomach pouch
Bypass a portion of the small intestine and reconnect to the new pouch

Your new, smaller stomach restricts the amount of food you can take in, and the bypassed intestine significantly minimizes calorie absorption each time you eat.

Am I a candidate for gastric bypass?

In general, you’re eligible for the procedure if:

You’re unable to lose weight with diet and exercise
Your BMI is 40 or above
Your BMI is between 35 - 39.9, and you have serious weight-induced health complications

If you’re considering a gastric bypass, Dr. Billing meets with you to ensure suitability. He conducts a thorough physical exam and talks to you about your health history, weight struggles, and medical condition. He’s a skilled and compassionate weight loss expert and recommends a gastric bypass if he believes it’s right for you.

How long is the surgery?

Typically, the surgery lasts about 3 hours from start to finish, but it depends on your unique biology. Dr. Billing and his team give you aftercare instructions, which include taking it easy for a couple of weeks before resuming your normal activities.

Prior to the surgery, he educates you about exactly what to expect and takes the time to answer all of your questions so that you feel at ease for the procedure.
